ANDESITE PLINTH

Andesite plinth / The great andesite temple on the 11th terrace

Inventory number

Location

Sarmizegetusa Regia

Description

The large andesite temple on the 11th terrace was delimited by four andesite blocks, between which were placed pillars made of the same lithic material. Only three pieces of andesite were discovered inside the temple, called in the archaeological literature either ‘columnsʼ or ‘pilastersʼ. The corroboration of older information with newer information revealed that these ‘columnsʼ or ‘pilastersʼ were actually column socles supporting column drums as can be seen in the digital reconstruction.
